Despite never winning the European Cup/UEFA Champions League, Atlético Madrid has won the Intercontinental Cup once. This happened in the 1973-74 season.
European Cup champions Bayern Munich declined to participate in the Intercontinental Cup and so runners-up Atlético Madrid took their place.
They faced South American champions Independiente.
The first leg was played on 12 March 1975 in Argentina. Atlético lost 1-0.
They bounced back in the return leg which took place in Spain, winning 2-0.
